The Department of Foreign Languages of Lutsk State Pedagogical Institute was founded in 1952. It consisted of 3 teachers: P. G. Movchan (acting department head), N. J. Paramonenko and T. G. Savytska. During the 1954–1979 years the department heads were: P. G. Movchan, N. J. Paramonenko, V. O. Stavytskyj, A. I. Charsekin.
The following teachers have been working at the department for many years: L. I. Bulatetska, Y. I. Gorot, I. O. Gunchyk, Z. D. Kikets, K. O. Kutsevych, S. V. Levytska, A. A. Lets, T. P. Lutsyshun, G. D. Maslak, P. E. Milasevych, N. D. Salamachina, T. V. Stepura, M. Y. Smijan, O. V. Tesliar, senior laboratory assistant – L. I. Subotina.
The department staff venerates the memory of the department senior lecturer, Ph D in philology Isydorivna. Ludmila She devoted more than 40 years of her life (1961–2003) to the education of students and to the establishment and development of the department, of which she headed from September 1980 till November 2000. Ludmila Isydorivna was awarded medals “For labour valour” (1978), “Veteran of labour” (1986), plaques “The excellent student of national education” (1980), “The winner of the social competition” (1975, 1980) and many honorary diplomas.
In 1993 two departments were established on the foundation of the department: the department of Foreign Languages for Humanities and the department of Foreign Languages for Sciences.
The department of Foreign Languages for Humanities provides teaching of English, German and French at two departments (The Faculty of History and The Faculty of Law) and at 4 university institutes: Pedagogical, Arts, Philology and Journalism, and Social Sciences, and prepares specialist degree candidates courses of English language in the Institute of Philology and Journalism and The Pedagogical Institute. “The foundations of scientific communications”, for the holders of a master degree, are also taught. The department staff investigates current methods of teaching and incorporates effective methods of the teaching of foreign languages for students majoring in the humanities. The opportunities of modern computer technologies are used during the process of preparing specialist candidates of ”Foreign language (English)”.
The department continues gaining experience in organizing distance learning of foreign languages for the students majoring in the humanities. In particular, a new electronic course of study in “Foreign language (professional) for “Law” students has been added.
The department staff consists of 15 teachers: Thirteen Ph.D. (10 associate professors,
3 Ph.D. without academic status). Ph.D. in Pedagogy, associate professor Gusak L. Y. teaches in doctoral studies at the speciality: 13.00.14 – “The theory and methods of a professional education”. For many years, associate professor Husak L. Y. has been the head of the “Experimental approach of teaching a foreign language at primary school” – project, started by The Lutsk Town Rada.

Research areas of the department:
The typology and function of language units within the phonetic, grammatical and lexical systems of modern Germanic and Romance languages: cognitive, communicative and pragmatic aspects are the department’s focus.
The main directions of research:
1. The study of the functioning of language units of the phonetic, grammatical and lexical systems of modern Germanic and Romance languages in terms of their communicative and pragmatic aspects.
2. The investigation of patterns for forming and developing communicative and linguistic competence in students of non-linguistic specialities during the course of their profession-oriented foreign language instruction.
3. The organization of the individual work of students majoring in the humanities.
