About the Department

The Conversational English Department was established in 1993 during the reorganization of Lutsk State Pedagogical Institute that became Lesya Ukrainka Volyn State University. The first head of the department was Professor Yevheniya Horot. From the 2009-2010 academic year till the 2011-2012 academic year the Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor Elina Koliada, headed the department. From September 2012 till August 2014 the Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor Alla Pavliuk, headed the department. Since September 2014 Professor Yevheniya Horot has headed the department.

The average age of teachers of the department is 44 years. The qualitative indicator of the academic staff is 88,2 %.

The Trends of scientific research 

Research is performed within 2 main trends: 1) systemic and functional characteristics of language units of differing levels, 2) lexicography. The department is the initiator and organizer of an annual international conference “Priorities of Germanic and Romanic linguistics”. 17 post-graduate students carry out the research under the supervision of Y. Horot, E. Koliada, L. Malimon, A. Pavliuk, T. Krysanova, N. Odarchuk, N. Yefremova. 16 dissertations have been defended under the supervision of Y. Horot, 3 – under the supervision E. Koliada, 1 – under the supervision of T. Krysanova.

Additional units (laboratories, centers):

The Academic-research lexicography laboratory functions on a voluntary basis in the Conversational English department. Its collaborators compiled and edited an English-Ukrainian Dictionary which was compiled by Y. I. Horot, L. M. Kotsiuk, L. K. Malimon and A. B. Pavliuk), Ukrainian-English Dictionary (Y. I. Horot, S. V. Byelova and L. K. Malimon), an English-Russsian Dictionary which was compiled by Y. I. Horot, S. V. Honcharuk, L. K. Malimon, A. B. Pavliuk, A. M. Trotsiuk, A. D. Shkarovetska), an Ukrainian-English Business Dictionary which was compiled by Y. Horot, O. Vasylenko, I. Kalynovska, E. Koliada, L. Malimon, A. Pavliuk, N. Yefremova) an English-Ukrainian Semantico-performative Dictionary which was compiled by Y. Horot, S. Honcharuk, L. Malimon and A. Pavliuk, S. Sheludchenko).  The English-Ukrainian Topical Dictionary-Thesaurus is ready to be published and was compiled by Y. Horot, I. Kalynovska, T. Krysanova, L. Malimon, A. Pavliuk, A. Trotsiuk).

The main achievements of the departmental staff in the field of scientific and methodological work:

Methodology for the educational process and self-study, the staff of the department has published 9 textbooks approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, 3 monographs (N. Odarchuk, I. Kalynovska A. Semeniuk), 6 dictionaries, a number of instructors’ manuals and runtime programs. Test samples allow for a differential approach to the learning process.

Majors / professions of specialists that the Department prepares

The department trains bachelors in the field of study 6.020303 Philology (Language and Literature (English)). Teachers of the department conduct a course of study, which adheres to national and international standards.

The department runs the following courses: the primary foreign language (English): oral and written speech, primary foreign language (English): practical grammar, primary foreign language (English): practical phonetics, secondary foreign language (English), country study of the country of the primary language and the secondary language (English), theoretical phonetics of English, a theoretical course of the secondary language (English), the basics of discourse analysis, ethno-linguistics, a business course of the secondary languages (English), genres and styles, cross-cultural communication, basics of scientific research, the history of linguistic theories, the history of translation, pragma-linguistics and psycholinguistics.
